Mein Teil by Rammstein (2004)

Mein Teil is the darkest song on this list and the only one with a court case for a plot. In 2001 Meiwes met a man online who wanted to be eaten, and over months in Rotenburg an der Fulda did as asked; the case was in the German papers when Rammstein wrote the song, and the chorus, you are what you eat, is the victim's logic as much as the killer's. The organ is not a joke here. It is the dinner.

Released on 26 July 2004, it reached number two in Germany and number one in Spain and was nominated for Best Metal Performance at the 2006 Grammys, where it lost to Slipknot. The band performed it with Lindemann as a chef and the keyboardist in a cooking pot, which is how Rammstein handle a subject they are not joking about: by staging it until the audience cannot look away.

Its afterlife is the pun. German critics noted the double meaning immediately, and the title has stayed in the language as shorthand for the case. On a list of songs that use the organ for a laugh, this is the one that uses it for horror, and it qualifies more completely than almost any of them: the whole song is about one.
