Candy Shop by 50 Cent feat. Olivia (2005)

Candy Shop is a Scott Storch beat with a Middle Eastern hook and a chorus that works as an invitation and a menu. 50 Cent spends the verses listing what the shop sells, Olivia plays the customer, and nobody buys any candy. Two years earlier he had been the guest on Lil' Kim's Magic Stick; this is the same metaphor with the ownership transferred, the sign on the door repainted and the "stick" now available in one flavour.

Released on 8 February 2005 from The Massacre, it spent nine consecutive weeks at number one in the United States and went five times Platinum, making it this list's joint longest-running chart-topper. 50 Cent's own account of the writing, quoted at the time, is that he set out to be as sexual as possible from a male perspective without being vulgar, which is the brief every song in the innuendo collection was secretly written to, and the best advertising campaign a confectioner never paid for.

Its afterlife is the "lollipop". Lil Wayne took the same image to number one in 2008; Flo Rida swapped the sweet for a "whistle" in 2012. Candy Shop is the record that proved a chart-topper could be entirely about one thing, for three and a half minutes, without saying it once, and it is still the one wedding DJs play when the parents have gone to bed.
