Dick by StarBoi3 feat. Doja Cat (2021)

StarBoi3 put the track on SoundCloud in May 2019 with a Doja Cat feature recorded before Doja Cat was a household name, the musical equivalent of buying a winning lottery ticket and leaving it in a coat. The beat is minimal, the verses are functional, and the hook is Doja stating what she is looking for in one syllable, as many times as the bar allows. There is no metaphor to decode. It is the title, sung with the focus of a drive-through order.

Two years later TikTok found it, built a lip-sync trend on the hook, and RCA re-released it on 23 April 2021, while Doja's Kiss Me More was everywhere. It charted at number 74 in the United Kingdom, number 12 on New Zealand's Hot Singles and number 95 in Australia, a respectable showing for a song whose title most platforms will not let you type into a playlist name.

Its afterlife is as a measure of how distribution changed. In 1994 Short Dick Man needed a censored edit called Short Short Man to reach radio; in 2021 a song called Dick reached three national charts with no edit at all, because the programme director had been replaced by an algorithm that does not blush. It is also the hardest song on this list to search for at work.
