Wait (The Whisper Song) by Ying Yang Twins (2005)

The Whisper Song is crunk with the volume turned down: a bare Mr. Collipark beat, a few handclaps, and Kaine and D-Roc of the Ying Yang Twins whispering every word like two men planning a surprise party. The chorus is a dare, delivered in a library voice, that ends by naming what she is about to see. It is the quietest explicit record ever to reach the American top twenty, and the quiet is the point: a whisper makes you lean in, and then it says that.

From U.S.A. (United State of Atlanta), it reached number 15 on the Hot 100 in 2005, with a clean edit that replaced the key noun with a breath. Radio played the breath. Clubs played the word. Everyone, somehow, heard the word.

Its afterlife is the gimmick. A decade of rap singles learned that a whisper is more suggestive than a shout, and the song still turns up whenever a film needs a scene to curdle. Lil Jon's Get Low had put the Twins on a number-two single two years earlier with a chorus that mentioned "balls" in passing; Wait is the follow-up in which the anatomy got the whole hook and a private viewing.
