What the title means
"You want my willy?" "Zizi" is the childish French word for the penis, and the song is a string of invitations, to his hut, his villa, his castle, each closed with the same four-word proposition, like an estate agent with one listing.
What the song is actually about
Francky Vincent, the Guadeloupean self-styled king of Antillean smut, has spent forty years making zouk and soca records whose only subject is the one in this title. This one was first released in 2004 as Viens ce soir on the album Ça va chauffer and sank without trace. In June 2009 he reissued it under the name of its chorus, and France discovered that a soca beat plus a man asking the question over and over was exactly what it wanted for the summer, against its better judgement.
It reached number six on the French singles chart in June 2009 and was filed by the press among the tubes de l'été, the summer hits, of that year. The joke never changes: a new venue in every verse, the same offer at the end of each, delivered with the delight of a man who has found the one lyric he will never need to replace, and a property portfolio to go with it.
Its afterlife is the word. "Zizi" is how French children say it and how Pierre Perret sang it in 1974, and Vincent's hit kept it in the national mouth thirty-five years later, as a proposition rather than a lesson. It is the French entry most likely to be played at a wedding, and the least likely to be explained to the children dancing to it.
