What the title means
"Suck it, it's grape." The thing to be sucked is presented as a "sweet" and is never a sweet; the grape flavour is the only detail the song supplies, and it is the only one the customer needs.
What the song is actually about
Northeastern forró has a long tradition of lyrics that mean two things, and the electric forró bands of the 2000's industrialised it, with accordions. Chupa que é de uva was written for Cavaleiros do Forró by Alexandre Avião, Richardson Maia and Marujo, and became famous in the version by Aviões do Forró, one of the biggest acts of the genre, on the live album Ao Vivo em Salvador in 2011. The chorus is the instruction; the verses are the flavour menu.
The Aviões version, credited to Elvis Pires, Rodrigo Mell and Richardson Maia, runs three minutes and five seconds and was covered almost immediately by MC Créu, Banda Reprise and others, which is how a forró hit becomes a national one: it crosses into funk and into every regional band's set within a season, like a cold through a school.
Its afterlife is the dance floor of every June festival in the Northeast, where the instruction is shouted by crowds who would never say it in a sentence, or in front of the priest. It is the Brazilian entry whose hook is the act performed on the organ, with the organ dressed as confectionery, the same costume the "lollipop" wears in Candy Shop and Les Sucettes, in a different key and with accordion.
