What the title means
"A stick born crooked never straightens" is the proverb, meaning people do not change. "Pau" is also the everyday Brazilian word for the penis, and a stadium singing about a crooked one has exactly one thing in mind, and it is not carpentry.
What the song is actually about
In 1995 a Salvador group called Gera Samba put two songs together, Pau que Nasce Torto by Cau Lima and Melô do Tchan by the duo Cissinho e Bieco, and the medley made them famous enough to rename themselves after it. É o Tchan, with Compadre Washington and Beto Jamaica out front and Carla Perez's choreography out front of them, became the defining act of the pagode baiano boom, and this was the record that started it.
The lyric uses the proverb straight, about behaviour that will not change, and the sources describe it as irreverent and sensual rather than spelling out why; the sensuality is the word "pau", which cannot be said in Brazil without the second meaning, and the dance that went with it. The group sold millions of albums in the late 1990's on the strength of jokes exactly this size, and exactly this crooked.
Its afterlife is the proverb itself, which no Brazilian has been able to say with a straight face since. It is on this list as the Brazilian pun entry, labelled interpreted because the double meaning lives in the word rather than in a statement by the writers, and because Carla Perez's choreography made the interpretation unnecessary.
