Lepo Lepo by Psirico (2013)

Psirico, a pagode band from Bahia, released Lepo Lepo in November 2013 as a deliberate counterpoint to the ostentation that ruled Bahian pagode: no yacht, no champagne, just a man with nothing but the thing in the chorus. Filipe Escandurras and Magno Santana wrote it, and the chorus was built to be shouted by a crowd that has decided what the word means, which in Brazil took about a week and no dictionary.

It owned Carnival 2014, went onto the official album of that summer's World Cup and got a version with the sertanejo star Luan Santana. Psirico's vocalist has said the "lepo lepo" is the art of winning a woman, affection, love; letras.mus.br records that the sexual reading is the accepted one. Both can be true of a word that did not exist in October 2013, and only one of them got a nation dancing.

Its afterlife is the word, which is now Brazilian for the thing you have when you have nothing else. It is the borderline entry of the Portuguese section, labelled interpreted, and a lesson in how Brazilian hits name the organ: by not naming it, loudly, for an entire Carnival.
