Put It in Your Mouth by Akinyele feat. Kia Jeffries (1996)

Akinyele, a Queens rapper with an underground reputation, released the Put It in Your Mouth EP in 1996 and watched its title track leave the rest of his career behind like a getaway driver. The hook is the title, sung sweetly by Kia Jeffries over a slow, lewd groove; the verses are the request in detail; the second half flips the direction so that she is doing the asking. It is explicit without being angry, which in 1996 rap was rarer than a good pension plan.

The EP peaked at number 127 on the Billboard 200 and number 18 on the R&B albums chart, with no pop radio to speak of and no pop radio willing to speak of it. It travelled through clubs and mixtapes instead, passed hand to hand like contraband, and it has outlasted most of the radio hits of its year.

Its afterlife is the hook itself. With no hit single behind it, the title track's auto-generated upload alone has close to a million plays, which is the purest measure of a hook there is. On this list it is the fellatio entry from a decade when the charts were still saying "lollipop" and hoping nobody's mother was listening.
