She Loves My Cock by Jackyl (1992)

Jackyl · 3:52

A Georgia Kmart refused a Platinum album over this song, so the band played the car park. The "cock", they insist, is a rooster.

What the title means

The oldest pun in English: "cock" as rooster, cock as the other thing. Jesse James Dupree insists on the bird for the entire song, and no one has believed him since 1992, possibly including the bird.

What the song is actually about

Jackyl's debut is best known for The Lumberjack, the song with the chainsaw solo, but the track that caused the trouble is this one: a Southern hard-rock stomp whose chorus states that she loves his "cock", and whose verses describe a farmyard with a perfectly straight face. The joke is the insistence. Every time the pun threatens to resolve, Dupree points firmly at the henhouse.

The album went Platinum, a million copies in the United States, which was not enough for a Kmart in Georgia to stock it with this title on it. Jackyl's answer was to play a concert in the store's car park, which got more press than the record and may be the only retail incident in history caused by a rooster. Clean editions of the album leave the song off altogether, so there are a million Jackyl fans who own a version without the poultry.

Its afterlife is as the case study. Whenever a chain store bans a record and the band turns the ban into a show, this is the precedent cited, and it is the pun Chuck Berry's "ding-a-ling" pretended not to be, performed at arena volume.
