What the title means

"A honeymoon in the hand": masturbation, in a phrase lyricist Eduardo Costa took from a character in James Joyce's Ulysses, the most literary alibi any song on this list can produce.

What the song is actually about

Una luna de miel en la mano was the last song written for Locura, Virus's fifth album, composed on a plane to New York in 1985; when Federico Moura asked his friend Eduardo Costa for a lyric, Costa answered that it would be about masturbation, and found the title in Joyce, as you do on a long flight. The result is a sleek, danceable synth-pop song whose subject is announced in the title and handled with a lightness the subject rarely gets.

Locura became Virus's best-selling album and the song one of the canonical records of Argentine rock, the kind every band in the country has covered or quoted. Moura, who died in 1988, sang it with the poise that made Virus the band Argentina's new wave was measured against, and La Nación has called the song an ode to self-satisfaction, which is the polite national consensus and the most accurate review on record.

Its afterlife is as the confirmed case. Most masturbation songs are only read as such; this one has its lyricist on the record saying so, with the literary source attached. It is the Spanish-language entry with the best provenance, and the most sophisticated song ever written about a honeymoon for one.
