What the title means

"Sugalumps" are Bret and Jemaine's testicles. The word is built to rhyme with My Humps, the song being parodied, with Kelis's Milkshake supplying the other half of the joke and a yard full of interested parties.

What the song is actually about

Sugalumps arrives in The New Cup, an episode from the second season of the HBO series, as the duo's attempt at a club track about their own assets. It is sung with total seriousness. The verses catalogue admirers; the chorus names the product; the choreography consists largely of pointing at it. Mickey Petralia's production is close enough to the originals that the parody works even if you have never seen the show, and slightly better if you have never heard My Humps.

It went onto I Told You I Was Freaky, the second album, which reached number 19 on the Billboard 200 in 2009, and Washington City Paper called it the best song ever about the family jewels and one of the funniest of the band's run, a category with surprisingly little competition. The series ended after that season, which left Sugalumps as the last great Conchords single and the duo's most lasting contribution to anatomy.

Its afterlife is as the testicle song of record. Big Balls got there first, in 1976, with its "balls" disguised as society dances; Sugalumps is the modern entry, thirty-three years later, and the only one performed by a comedy duo who seem genuinely proud of the merchandise.
