What the title means

Cynthia Albritton, known as Cynthia Plaster Caster, was the Chicago artist whose casts of musicians' penises began with Jimi Hendrix in 1968. The song is Simmons filling in the application form.

What the song is actually about

Plaster Caster is Simmons' bass-driven rocker on Love Gun, the 1977 album whose title track is Paul Stanley's own entry on this list, which makes it the only record here with two phallic songs by two different writers, a level of departmental efficiency rarely seen in rock. The lyric is the casting session from the subject's point of view: she has her materials, he has his, and the chorus asks her to grab hold of him faster. There is no hidden subject to find; the song is about a mould.

Love Gun reached number four on the Billboard 200 and went Platinum, so the song reached more homes than Albritton's actual work ever did. She never cast Simmons, and said he wrote the song to make people think she had, which turns a boast into a rumour he started about himself, the most KISS thing imaginable.

Its afterlife belongs to her. Albritton's collection was first exhibited in New York in 2000, a documentary called Plaster Caster followed in 2001, and in 2023 the Kinsey Institute acquired a large part of her archive. The Lemonheads covered the song in 1990. On a list full of men describing the organ, this is the one about a woman who measured it, in plaster, and kept the results.
